The Prostitution Awareness & Action Foundation of Edmonton (PAAFE) was created in 1997 to distribute funds from Edmonton’s first prostitution offender program (known as “john school”). It has evolved into a community-level catalyst for change, advocating for the safety of sexually exploited individuals, their families and impacted neighbourhoods.
In 2008, PAAFE brought B.C. artist Betty Kovacic’s exhibition, A Room Full of Missing Women, to Edmonton to raise awareness about the devastation of sexual exploitation. The exhibition, which includes portraits of 50 missing or murdered women from Vancouver’s downtown eastside surrounding 50 shrouded, faceless females’ figures, drove the message home to the Works festival audience in 2008. Partners in bringing the exhibit to Edmonton were the Edmonton Arts Council, The Works Art & Design Festival, Edmonton Community Foundation and Friends of PAAFE. This video was made possible by a grant from the Edmonton Community Foundation.
